23rd October 2010 - All the crazy
Well, my album deadline has come and gone.
About a month ago I had a crisis - the inspiration just wasn’t flowing and I was piling on the pressure not only to finish on time but to produce something BRILLIANT. Clearly, it wasn’t going to happen. So I’ve decided to aim instead for next Spring. My new philosophy is ‘it takes as long as it takes.’
I had to step away from the songs for a while. It was like staring at one of those dot paintings - sometimes you see a picture and sometimes it’s just dots and you don’t know if what you’re seeing is really there. I went a bit crazy. I’d got to a place where I wasn’t hearing the songs anymore; I was hearing flaws that weren’t there and obsessing over tiny details. So I took some time out and came back to work with some perspective. I had to remind myself that this whole process was about creating the album I wanted to make not an album I thought people might want to hear.
During all the crazy a friend sent me a video which I found really inspiring. It’s Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat Pray Love author) talking about creativity. I don’t get everything she says (she lost me with the Greek muse stuff!) but some of it really resonated.
I’ve posted a link to it below so you can check it out for yourself.
Hope you get something good from it too.
